Her summers in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home for a specific juror. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist at a small production studio right out of high school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
